Fixity: The Things In The Room “<Penske Recordings 2016>
Fixity is a musical project orchestrated by the Irish Dan Walsh. On each recording he surrounds himself with different people in order to give substance to his various inspirations. “The Things In The Room” is to date his fourth album. For this record, Dan Walsh on drums left Sweden to surround the tenor saxophonist Emil Nerstrand (Brigaden / Heavy Water / The Nod), guitarist Nils Andersson (Ljom / Ava) and bassist Fredrik Persson (Sista Bossen / The Good Morning Spider / Leo Kall / Cassus). The result of these four improvisations, recorded in a single take is simply outstanding. The pickup is clear at once rough and suave partially bring out the different musical asperities of Fixity. We often think of the encounter of the mythical rhythm of Can or closer to us of AluK Todolo with an inspired Archie Shepp. Their mix of Jazz and Kraut Rock is a total success. The musicians never pour into exuberance, tempering their interventions at the service of incandescent passages. The Lounge Lizard by John Lurie and Nels Cline prowl in the next room but Fixity has achieved an extraordinary performance during this session. The result is a very large record that will easily pass the cape of the modes and addictions of the moment to impose on the will of years as one of the great albums of this decade.
